Welcome to the NMNH Freshwater Mussel Biodiversity and Conservation Lab
Freshwater mussels are some of the most endangered animals on the planet and are the focus of worldwide conservation efforts.
At NMNH, we seek to 1) better understand the patterns and processes that influence freshwater mussel diversity, distribution, and decline, and 2) how these ecological and evolutionary insights can be practically applied to mussel conservation. With natural history collections and voucher specimens at the center, our research relies on various approaches including field expeditions, genomics, biodiversity informatics, and imaging.
