The Tourmaline Butterfly features the fabulous range of colors found in tourmaline gems. The body of the butterfly has three gems from Mozambique. The violet gem is 7.98 carats, the yellow gem 6.98 carats, and the blue head is 2.77 carats. The wings have 7.38 carats of untreated Brazilian Paraiba tourmalines and 6.05 carats of untreated Cu-bearing Mozambique tourmalines. The butterfly is accented with 0.79 carats of diamonds. The 18k yellow gold Tourmaline Butterfly is part of a collection of 18 jeweled butterfly brooches created and designed by Elvis "Buzz" Gray and Bernadine Johnston. The butterflies were gifted to the National Gem Collection by the Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors.
