The Topaz Butterfly exhibits the rainbow of colors of precious topaz. The body of the butterfly has a round brilliant-cut intense imperial topaz weighing 5.20 carats and a 3.63 carat vivid pink pear-shaped topaz, both from Brazil. The top of the wings has 3.03 carats of rare red topaz gems believed to have been mined in Russia. The bottom wings have 2.52 carats of pink topaz from Pakistan. The small stones in the wings are light blue topaz gems from Brazil. And approximately a carat of diamonds accent the wing tips. The 18k yellow gold Spessartine Butterfly is part of a collection of 18 jeweled butterfly brooches created and designed by Elvis "Buzz" Gray and Bernadine Johnston. The butterflies were gifted to the National Gem Collection by the Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors.
