The Spessartine Butterfly has gems from the Little 3 Mine in Ramona, California. This mine is closed and no longer producing, making this butterfly unique and rare as it features beautiful American gems. The body of the butterfly is comprised of 10.10 carats of vivid orange spessartine garnets. The inside of the wings has 6.30 carats and the outside wings have approximately10 carats.The eyes are 0.15 carats of green tsavorite garnets. The butterfly is accented with white enamel and diamonds (0.73 carats). The 18k yellow gold Spessartine Butterfly is part of a collection of 18 jeweled butterfly brooches created and designed by Elvis "Buzz" Gray and Bernadine Johnston. The butterflies were gifted to the National Gem Collection by the Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors.
