The spinels in the Spinel Butterfly were faceted from rough mined in Vietnam.The head features a vivid pink gem weighing 2.58 carats, the body has an oval light pink gem weighing 3.25 carats, and an elongated light pink gem in the tail weighs 2.64 carats. The four larger round spinels in the wings have a total weight of 3.88 carats. The smaller spinels vary in color and have a total weight of 5.11 carats. The eyes are 0.09 carats of jeremejevites from Namibia. And the diamond accents have a total weight of 1.08 carats. The 18k yellow gold Spinel Butterfly is part of a collection of 18 jeweled butterfly brooches created and designed by Elvis "Buzz" Gray and Bernadine Johnston. The butterflies were gifted to the National Gem Collection by the Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors.
