This Titanite Butterfly has two brown gems in the body that weigh 8.93 carats and 4.86 carats. The wings have 12.60 carats of brown titanite and 20.17 carats of green titanite, all from Madagascar. Gem quality titanite, also known as sphene, can be found in shades of yellow, green, brown or red with a resinous to adamantine luster. Faceted stones are known for their pronounced dispersion or “fire." The Brown Titanite Butterfly is part of a collection of 18 jeweled butterfly brooches created and designed by Elvis "Buzz" Gray and Bernadine Johnston. The butterflies were gifted to the National Gem Collection by the Smithsonian Gem and Mineral Collectors.
